Purpose like a Paint Swatch
Discovering purpose can feel like testing paint swatches on an unfinished wall. We pick colors that look appealing and feel right— maybe for comfort and serenity or maybe for a thrill with something edgy that will satisfy our internal renovation. We pick options of what we tend to like and we hope one sticks. We choose a color and commit to it, hoping that down the road we won’t need to recondition the space again. And once we make a decision on what we think our purpose should be, we hope it will satisfy our innate desire to live for something meaningful.
Picking through the samples of paint swatches can feel overwhelming and monotonous. We have different likes and hobbies and passions and jobs, and the list goes on. Trying to lean into what we think our purpose is or what we think it should be oftentimes feels like picking paint colors you think you like and painting samples on a blank wall. We take a step back and see what color we might like the best for that particular area. It should be exciting and fun, but can feel a lot like trial and error. What if we pick the wrong color? What if liking the color is just a phase? How do we know what our purpose is? What if we get tired of the color, burned out in our fleeting, make-shift purpose?
We believe that everyone has an inherent purpose, even in the mundane moments of life. By developing clarity within our day to day, we increase our confidence. Between clarity and confidence and simple actions done daily, we uncover our purpose that has been there the whole time. We can live with a newfound motivation toward what drives us, even if where you are now doesn’t necessarily feel like your purpose. Sometimes it’s a matter of exposing the wall rather than painting over it.
Just like anything, the process of discovering your purpose and learning how to use it comes with time, diligence, practice, and patience. It sometimes feels just like watching paint dry. But once you know the perfect fit, it’s worth it.
The good news is we’ve all been in that place, and with community to network with, coaching to get assistance, and content to live by, you can get a clearer, more confident image of that very purpose we all have inside of us. The renovation will be worth it.
